Serbia police probe copper item thefts

LESKOVAC, Serbia, June 7 (UPI) -- A Serbian police chief is looking for thieves who are absconding with copper items such as overhead telephone cables and boilers.

Leskovac Police Chief Nenad Stojkovic said 2.2 pounds of copper is worth $3 on the black market, triggering the rise of copper thefts, Belgrade's Beta news agency reported.

He said state-owned Serbia Telekom reported the theft of 335 feet of copper phone cables taken off wooden posts in the nearby Crna Trava mountainous area.

Several villagers said their copper distillery boilers for producing homemade brandy were stolen.
