LAKE TAHOE, Nev., May 31 (UPI) -- The South Lake Tahoe, Nevada, area is experiencing a slew of bears unafraid of humans, and experts blame people leaving out garbage and trying to feed them.

Nevada Department of Wildlife biologist Carl Lackey said bear sightings have been increasing recently and blames human conduct.

He said people leave trash outside and don't close dumpsters, the Reno (Nev.) Gazette-Journal reports.

Mike Paulson, a maintenance supervisor for the Tahoe Village condo complex, said he's seen tourists leave food out to entice bears so they can take pictures of them.

Lackey said the garbage trend is giving the bears a larger and year-round food source. That has led to bigger bears and those who don't go into hibernation.

He said the bears are too used to being around humans and if it becomes a problem or a threat, the state will have to begin euthanizing the animals.
