LANZHOU, China, May 11 (UPI) -- A Chinese teenager has traveled across China by hanging onto a train undercarriage for 24 hours because he didn't have enough money for a ticket.

The 19-year-old "rode" the train from Shanghai to Lanzhou, the capital of Gansu province -- a distance of 1,360 miles -- to return home after an unsuccessful monthlong job search, the Shanghai Daily reported Wednesday.

On April 3, he left his hometown to try to find work in Shanghai. Failing to get a job because he didn't have an identification card, he spent all his savings in one month. He decided to sneak into Shanghai Railway Station on Sunday and hide under a train.

The police found him covered in soot 24 hours later when the train reached Lanzhou, and even offered him something to eat and drink, as well as enough money to get home.
