Iraq politicians scrap over ring tone

BAGHDAD, Iraq, May 11 (UPI) -- A cell phone that played a Shiite Muslim chant in Iraq's parliament sparked a scuffle between its owner and bodyguards of the chamber's Sunni speaker.

Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani heard the phone belonging to hard-line Shiite politician Gufran al-Saidi ring on Tuesday, and sent one of his bodyguards over to ask her to turn it off, The Times of London reported Wednesday.

As the guard arrived, it rang again, and a fight broke out between the bodyguards and even al-Saidi in her veil, the report said.

The scrap led to a general walkout, but after 20 minutes, outgoing Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari convinced everyone to return.

Sectarian violence between minority Sunni Muslims and Shiites claimed more than 1,000 lives in Baghdad in April.

Cingular pulls racist ring tone

BROWNSVILLE, Texas, May 11 (UPI) -- A ring tone offered for sale online that makes fun of illegal Hispanic immigrants has been pulled from the Cingular Wireless Web site.

Brent Wilkes, national executive director of the League of United Latin American Citizens, told the Brownville (Texas) Herald as soon as he heard it on Tuesday, he called AT&T, part owner of Cingular, and demanded an explanation.

In the ring tone entitled "La Migra," a siren is heard, followed by a male voice that says in a southern accent: "Calmate, calmate, this is la migra. Por favor, put the oranges down and step away from the cell phone. I repeat-o, put the oranges down and step away from the telephone-o. I'm deporting you back home-o."

Cingular officials seemed to be caught off guard by their Web site's content, the newspaper said.

Company spokesman Mark Siegel was nearly speechless after listening to the $2.49 ring tone.

Siegel said the company is reviewing its process of screening ring tones, which he said are created by a combination of in-house and contracted staff.

Women bowlers booted for not drinking

GLOUCESTER, England, May 11 (UPI) -- A bowling alley with just one lane in Gloucester, England, has barred an all-women's team from play because they don't drink enough alcohol to be profitable.

Charges of sexism have arisen over the decision by the Gloucester Services Club, where teams play skittles, a 9-pin variety of bowling.

Jennifer Eamer of the all-female Matchmakers team said she was given a letter by the club saying her team would have to find a new home, as the lane was being reassigned to a men's team, the BBC reported.

"I think it's sexual discrimination," she told the BBC.

However, club official Steve Earby said the Matchmakers spent between $35 and $50 on the evenings they played, while a men's team would spend more than $200.

Teen arrested for running over friend

CHESTERTON, Ind., May 11 (UPI) -- One Indiana teenager was arrested for hitting another teenager with his car but both say it wasn't malicious but a stunt gone wrong.

Stephen Domonkos said his friend Michael Morris likes to do daredevil stunts, and persuaded Domonkos to hit him with his car, The Munster (Ind.) Times reported Wednesday.

The 18-year-old agreed but instead of ending with a load of adrenaline and laughs as the two have done before, 17-year-old Morris was taken to Porter Valpraiso Hospital Campus with a broken leg and arm and road rash.

The Times said the Chesterton, Ind., residents planned the stunt for Saturday outside a fast-food restaurant where Domonkos works.

Morris told him to run into him but faster than in past stunts and Domonkos said he got to about 25 mph when he hit Morris, who broke the windshield and ended up on the ground, screaming in pain.

Domonkos was charged with felony criminal recklessness causing serious bodily injury.

Morris told the newspaper, "I won't do this no more."
