CHICAGO, May 8 (UPI) -- Chicago firefighters rescued a toddler who became lodged in a chimney flue.

The Chicago Sun-Times called it a case of "real-life chutes and ladders."

Relatives told the newspaper the 2-year-old entered the flue through an opening in an attic apartment in the two-story home where he lives with his mother.

The child dropped an entire floor before stopping at about the level of the basement ceiling, firefighters said.

Crews couldn't get anyone inside the chimney to pull him up so they removed a vent pipe attached to the chimney, and a firefighter helped pull him out.

The boy suffered some scratches on his arm and was treated at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Fire officials say they don't know how the boy got inside.
