Catowner tries to prevent eviction

NEW YORK, May 1 (UPI) -- A New York woman with 30 cats in a studio apartment is trying to use witchcraft to stave off eviction.

Melanie Neer told the New York Times harmful spells are forbidden by the principles of Wicca. But she said it is lawful to ask that any harm done to you rebound on the person who does it.

Thus the spell: Any evil intention against my cats and me will come back to you, three times three.

Neer and her mother have lived in the apartment in the neighborhood of Elmhurst in Queens for 45 years. In 1992, they had nine cats but some of those cats had more cats and by 2001 there were 100 in the small apartment.

Under an agreement that year with their landlord, the Neers are limited to no more than two cats. The flock has been reduced to 30, but the landlord has issued an eviction order, which his lawyer described as a "last-ditch attempt" to solve what has become a health and safety problem.
