Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., for example, was spotted traveling the one block between the Senate office building and a gas station news conference in a Chrysler LHS that is rated at 18 mpg. Her colleague, Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., made the trip in small a Hyundai Elantra. Advertisement A survey of senatorial and staff cars parked on Delaware Avenue found that the average fuel efficiency of the Democratic fleet at 23 mpg was slightly better than the Republican fleet's 18 mpg. But the prize for fuel-efficiency goes to a Republican. Sen. Richard Lugar drives a hybrid Toyota Prius capable of getting 60 mph. One of the more peculiar senatorial cars is the 1970s era Volkswagen belonging to Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C. Built before fuel efficiency entered the national consciousness, the Volkswagen has no government fuel efficiency rating.
