PRETORIA, South Africa, April 25 (UPI) -- In a variation of life imitating art, a car thief in South Africa let go a six-week-old baby he had driven off with in a stolen car.

The incident near Pretoria was reminiscent of the Oscar-winning South African film "Tsotsi," in which a young car thief, who stole a car after shooting the owner, begins to care for his infant captive.

In the real-life version, the suspect left the baby outside a nearby school after getting a call from police on the mother's cell phone that she had left in her purse lying on the passenger seat, The Times of London reported.

"He said he did not want the baby and had been waiting for a call to tell us where he would leave it," a police spokesman said. "The whole incident was uncanny. It was a complete simulation of the film."

J.P. Botha, father of the infant, said the thief hung up on the police without telling the name of the school where he would leave their child, the report said. "It was two hours of hell before we heard from him again. I told him I didn't want the car, just my son."

It was not known if any arrest had been made in the kidnapping.
