NAPERVILLE, Ill., April 25 (UPI) -- A pooch's passion for pizza is being blamed for a Naperville, Ill., house fire that caused $50,000 damage and left the pet unconscious.

Fire investigators ruled recently Skylar, a 3-year-old female golden retriever-poodle mix, likely turned on a stove burner while trying to nab the pizza that owner Fred Haines IV left atop cardboard on the stove the night before.

Haines said he was running late for work that morning and skipped his usual last-minute check.

"I didn't do my typical sweep through the kitchen to make sure (Skylar) couldn't get at anything," Haines said.

Fortunately for Skylar, firefighters responded within four minutes to a neighbor's report of smelling smoke and resuscitated the thief.

"Skylar's fur is white, but when I saw her that day, she was literally a black dog from the fire's soot and ash," Haines told the Naperville Sun.
