ARCADIA, Calif., April 3 (UPI) -- A $3 million lawsuit filed against a California high school softball coach who yelled at his female players has struck out in court.

Attorney Michael Oddenino filed the lawsuit in October, alleging that Coach Don Riggio yelled at his daughter when she played on the Arcadia High School team last spring.

The suit claimed Riggio inflicted "emotional distress" on the girl by calling her "a 2-year-old," and that Riggio "took advantage of his position of authority to engage in an abusive pattern of excessive intimidation and humiliation of the female players, frequently calling them idiots, and belittling them for minor errors."

The suit sought $3 million for intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress, negligence, a civil rights violation, and sex discrimination, the Pasadena (Calif.) Star News reported.

However, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Jan Pluim dismissed the case, ruling there is nothing wrong with "a coach pushing an athlete to excel, and in so doing, using words that in another context would be considered rude, demeaning and even intimidating."

The girl has since left the softball team, the report said.
