ALBUQUERQUE, March 31 (UPI) -- A 7-year-old boy in Albuquerque saved his friend from an attacking pit bull by driving his bicycle between the dog and the victim.

Alejandro Munoz was riding his bike Sunday with his friend Miguel Baros, also 7, when the pit bull grabbed Miguel from behind and pulled him off his bike, reports the Albuquerque Journal.

As Alejandro drove his bike between the dog and his friend, he was bitten on the ankle but Miguel was saved, the report said. Later Miguel's mother and a friend helped chase the dog away.

"I was driving by to distract the dog and he got me, too," Alejandro said. "He's a bad boy."

The pit bull, surrendered by its owner to authorities, is protective custody.

Both Alejandro and Miguel were treated at local hospitals.

Neighbors said the dog had attacked other children and had killed a neighbor's Chihuahua.

County authorities plan next month to recognize the boys for their bravery.
