Indiana auctions high-end chairs

INDIANAPOLIS, March 30 (UPI) -- Indiana has turned to eBay to sell 10 rocking chairs purchased for a state hospital at what Gov. Mitch Daniels says was too high a price.

The chairs cost the state about $1,800.

The minimum bid on the eBay site for a single chair is $999, and the winner of that bid has the option to buy some or all of the rest for the same price, the Evansville (Ind.) Courier and Press reports.

The Family and Social Services Administration bought the chairs during the rebuilding of Madison State Hospital. The price eventually caught the eye of someone in the Daniels administration and they were held up as an example of government waste.

"These rocking chairs and the entire Madison Hospital project represent the way that money was spent in the past without full consideration of not only the extravagant cost but the future of the institutionalized care model for mental health," said Mitch Roob, the social services administrator.
