NEW YORK, March 23 (UPI) -- The first of 20 new high-tech pay toilets in New York City has made its debut, offering those in need 15 minutes of privacy for 25 cents.

The units are self-cleaning and dispense liquid soap and hot water, and give a 3-minute warning when the doors are about to slide open, the New York Daily News reported. The high-tech outhouse has a stainless steel toilet on one side and a sink on the other.

Under a deal being negotiated between the Spanish Cemusa corporation and the Department of Transportation, the company would pay up to $1 billion over 20 years for the right to place advertising on the inner and outer walls of the toilets.

If the deal is approved, the toilets would be installed on city streets at as-yet-unannounced locations by the end of the year.
