Parole questionnaire irks officers' nerves

NEW YORK, March 20 (UPI) -- The parolees themselves may be evaluating New York parole officers if a department questionnaire gets final approval.

The move has officers, supervisors and union officials furious that the people they are supposed to supervise would be used to judge their job performance.

The New York Post received a copy of the roughly 21-question survey, which includes "yes" or "no" questions such as: "When I absconded, I was broke," and "I understand the consequences of taking a risk."

But questions like "My parole officer cared whether I completed parole," and "Was the parole officer very interested in your problems," aren't taken lightly by officers.

"Do you know what a field day these violent felons, these vicious criminals are going to have?" said Parole Officer Manuelita Clemente and an official with Public Employees Federation Division 236.

Scott Steinhardt, spokesman for the State Division of Parole, said the questionnaire hasn't been fully edited by administration and may not be released. He said it is intended to gauge parolees and their families in order to strengthen the parole officer's job.
