MOSCOW, March 15 (UPI) -- A Moscow man has been sentenced to one year in jail for stealing 40 pigeons and an undetermined number of chickens.

An official of the Golovinsky District Court told the Moscow Times the man and a drinking buddy cooked and ate some of the purloined birds -- and traded others for vodka.

The 35-year-old Moscow man at the center of the case was not identified, because he could still appeal the ruling. His friend was not identified because he was undergoing a psychological evaluation.

The owner of the pigeon coop where the birds were stolen went to the police in August 2005 after he discovered that 40 of his most expensive pigeons were missing. He said several of his chickens had also disappeared.

Police tracked the suspects to a nearby apartment, where they found feathers strewn about the floor and two pigeon carcasses in the refrigerator, a court official told the newspaper.

The pigeons were reportedly worth at least $100 apiece.
