EDINBURGH, Scotland, March 12 (UPI) -- A Scottish 16-year-old is heading for the North Pole soon in a test for a proposed Polar Academy high school.

Craig Mathieson, an experienced polar explorer and the expedition's chief guide, told Scotland on Sunday that Christopher Struthers was the one person to approach him as he searched Scottish schools for potential polar talent.

"I spent six months visiting schools to find the right kind of person for the Academy, but Christopher was the only person to come knocking on my door," Mathieson said. "He actually wanted to do it and that is the kind of attitude we are trying to foster by setting up this scheme."

The Polar Academy is the brain child of Sir Tom Hunter, a businessman and philanthropist. If this year's expedition is a success, he hopes to involve more children aged 12 to 16 next year, although 14 would presumably the minimum age for actual polar travel.

Struthers is training to navigate the expedition and would be the first 16-year-old to ski to the North Pole if everything works out.
