Wolf's missing leg mystifies zoo staff

CHICAGO, March 3 (UPI) -- Zookeepers are trying to determine how a wolf at the Brookfield Zoo near Chicago lost a leg, a limb they have not been able to find.

Zoo workers searched the wolf area of the zoo for the leg Thursday, reported the Chicago Sun-Times, but none was found. The wolf showed no bite marks that might indicate a fight, and other wolves were unharmed.

The break was "done very cleanly,'' said Tom Meehan, director of veterinary services.

Officials also considered possible design flaws in the $2.5 million exhibit, which opened in June 2004.

After an attack on a young wolf last year, keepers had split the animals into two groups -- five older established wolves in one area and three younger animals, which came to the exhibit last fall, into another.

Wolves can adapt to walking on three legs, Meehan said. A wolf that lost a leg at another facility was successfully released to the wild.
