STILLWATER, Minn., Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Officials in Minnesota's Washington County say their historic courthouse has become a "money pit" and should pay its own way.

County government and courts moved out of the 1870 building known as Historic Courthouse the year it turned 100. Now, the county spends $267,000 a year on its upkeep.

Bill Pulkrabek, chairman of the County Board, told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that a Starbucks or some similar high-rent tenant would be helpful.

"We've put literally hundreds of thousands of dollars into this building year after year," he said. "I love history, I love the courthouse. The thing is, it's a money pit."

Carolyn Phelps, coordinator for the old courthouse, said that revenue from renting space in the building and from special events has increased. About 120 weddings a year are held there.
