LONDON, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- One of the world's richest men, the Sultan of Brunei, has given up trying to prove in British courts that his younger brother embezzled $14 billion from Brunei.

In a lengthy legal battle, Prince Jefri, 51, was accused by his brother Sultan Hassanal, 59, of embezzling $14 billion from the Brunei Investment Authority during his 13 years as Finance Minister of the oil-rich country, The Times of London said Tuesday.

In May 2000, as part of a settlement, Prince Jefri, who has homes in London, New York and Paris, agreed to hand over $5 billion in assets, which were sold during a four-day auction in London in 2001.

But the sultan maintained in a new lawsuit that his brother was still living an extravagant lifestyle, which allegedly costs $480,000 a month to maintain, and demanded to know the source of his income.

The prince resisted, arguing that disclosure would be a violation of his right to privacy under the European Convention on Human Rights, and the sultan admitted defeat last week.

The brothers have not spoken directly for some time, the newspaper said.
