ABERDEEN, Scotland, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Granite Aberdeen, Scotland, aka the Oil Capital of Europe, hopes to give newborn citizens lifelong pride in their birthplace with upgraded birth certificates.

The new civic pride certificates have gold borders, The Scotsman reported. They also include a message from John Reynolds, the Lord Provost: "It is my pleasure to welcome the birth of a new citizen of Aberdeen. The city values each and every one of its citizens and it is my sincere hope that you will always take pride in the city of your birth."

The certificates are not welcomed by all. Kevin Stewart, a member of the council and Scottish National Party, said citizens should take pride in a well-run city, not in a fancy piece of paper.

With a population of more than 200,000 and a strategic site near the North Sea oil field, Aberdeen has become one of the most prosperous places in Britain, and the alumni of its 500-year-old university include Prince William, third in line to the throne. But the city's reputation has long been one of a gritty industrial center.
