NAPEAGUE, N.Y., Feb. 4 (UPI) -- If a message in a bottle survives a 3,000-mile trek, it's usually cause for celebration, but a New York man was stunned to be told the bottle was litter.

U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Harvey Bennett said he tossed the plastic bottle that contained his name and address into the Atlantic Ocean near his Long Island, N.Y., home last August and initially was delighted to get a response, the Daily Telegraph reported Saturday.

"I recently found your bottle while taking a scenic walk on a beach by Poole Harbor. While you may consider this some profound experiment on the path and speed of oceanic currents, I have another name for it -- litter," said the letter signed "Henry Biggelsworth."

"You Americans don't seem to be happy unless you are mucking up somewhere. If you wish to foul your own nest, all well and good, but please refrain in the future from fouling mine."

Bennett said that in the ultra-fast world of e-mail and instant messaging he thinks messages in bottles are fun and a good way to communicate.
