RICHMOND, Va., Jan. 27 (UPI) -- A Virginia legislator says that his gun accidentally went off in his office as he was ejecting a clip.

Republican Jack Reid apologized three times for the mishap, the Virginian-Pilot reported -- once to the Democratic caucus, once to the Republicans and a bi-partisan apology to the entire House of Delegates.

The bullet struck a bullet-proof vest, a gift from law enforcement, hanging on Reid's office door. No one was hurt.

Reid has a concealed weapons permit allowing him to carry the .380 Kel-Tec handgun.

Legislators from both sides of the aisle accepted the apologies.

"Just like anything else, accidents do happen," said Democrat Kenneth Melvin. "I'm sure he'll learn from this and be more careful with his handgun."
