SCHOFIELDS, Australia, Dec. 15 (UPI) -- While several hundred students at an Australian primary school watched, an off-duty police officer disarmed a man with a handgun.

The Sydney Morning Herald reports students at St. Joseph's School in Schofields and their parents were in the auditorium for an awards ceremony Thursday when two men got into a violent argument. One man pulled out a handgun and was disarmed and subdued by Senior Constable Michael Morris, who has three children at the school.

"I did what any other officer would have done in my shoes. I acted purely on instinct," Morris said. "Every piece of training which I have undergone during 19 years in the police came to the fore."
