ALFRED, N.Y., Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Students at Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y., who had been causing fire alarms to go off because of microwaves, have been offered cooking lessons.
The university had 39 food-related fire alarms in campus housing during the last school year and every time the alarm is sounded residents have to evacuate and the fire department must respond, said Carol Wood, associate dean of students.
To reduce the number of fire alarms, the university has offered cooking lessons for the students, the Buffalo (N.Y.) News reported Saturday.
So far a breakfast cooking class has been offered, which featured a bacon and eggs demonstration and a detailed discussion of spatulas. More classes are planned.
"I learned something, and I've been cooking for a long time," Wood said.
