BERLIN, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- An ad campaign designed to release Germans from collective guilt and depression from the Nazi era, uses a slogan also used by the Nazis.

The $34 million Du Bist Deutschland, or You Are Germany, campaign was designed to boost German morale, which studies say stems from economic woes and chronically high unemployment, reported the Daily Telegraph Saturday.

Stefan Morz, a historian and archivist, set off a firestorm of controversy after he uncovered photographs of a 1935 Nazi convention in which soldiers display a banner reading, in gothic script, "Denn Du Bist Deutschland," or "Because You Are Germany."

"Every time I see the slogan 'Du Bist Deutschland' I am reminded of this rather disturbing parallel with the past," said Morz.

Lars Christian Cords, the campaign's coordinator said the campaign stands for the values human dignity, democracy, respect of the individual and pluralism.

"We are not very happy," he said.
