LAS VEGAS, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Teachers at a Las Vegas middle school have been eating their lunch outside in protest of a rat infestation at the school.

Students are getting sack lunches because the kitchen at Fremont Middle School has been closed since Oct. 14, The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports.

The Clark County Health District has been setting traps and bait for the rats for two weeks.

The rats, called roof rats, weigh about 9 ounces on average with a head through tail length of 14 inches.

Seventh-grade teacher Lisa Harkrader said the teachers are outside protesting because the students have no choice where to eat.

The gym and teacher's lounge have been declared the only safe places to eat although teachers say they've found rats in both.

Dave Broxterman, the district's administrator of facilities, confirmed the rat found in the teachers' lounge.

Principal Ben Montoya said the teachers' protest shows a "legitimate concern."

He said the Health Department would have to decide whether school should be canceled.
