ROME, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Roman dogs are entitled to walks every day under new rules in the Italian capital that also ban docking pets' ears and tails and leaving them in hot cars.

Italian media said the rules are intended to give millions of pets, wild birds and other animals a dignified existence compatible with their needs, the BBC reported.

Rome has an estimated 150,000 dogs and 300,000 cats.

"The civilization of a city can also be measured by this," sponsor Monica Cirinna, told newspaper Il Messaggero. "It's good to do whatever we can for our pets who, in exchange for a little love, fill our existence with their attention."

It was not immediately clear how Rome planned to enforce the rules, which also ban trimming cats' claws, electric or pointed pet collars, round fish bowls and displaying animals in shop windows.

"How Much is That Doggie in the Window" could earn violators a $600 fine.
