FRANKFORT, Ky., Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Kentucky's first lady canceled a fundraiser for renovation of the governor's mansion when only 80 people responded to invitations.

The Lexington (Ky.) Herald-Leader reports that Glenna Fletcher and her husband, Gov. Ernie Fletcher, are both having trouble raising money. Donations have been sparse for Kentuckians for Justice, a defense fund for members of his administration caught up in a hiring scandal.

"You give money strategically," Donald Gross, a political scientist at the University of Kentucky, told the newspaper. "If there's a perception that he is seriously hurt, then you're just throwing your money away. And he just seems to be floundering up there."

The Governor's Mansion Preservation Project has raised just over $800,000 out of a hoped-for $5 million. Construction was supposed to begin this winter with the goal of having the mansion in shape in time for the Kentucky Derby.

Foundation President Mira Ball said that schedule may now be impossible.

"We're sort of in a holding pattern right now," she said.
