JOURDANTON, Texas, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- The mayor of a small town in Texas abruptly resigned this week to the cheers of opponents who packed a city council meeting.

"It's about time," one member of the audience yelled as Jourdanton Mayor Tammy Clark made her announcement Monday night, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

Clark has been under fire since her former live-in boyfriend, charged with killing an elderly neighbor, told police she was involved. She denies any wrongdoing and has not been charged.

"I will not be living in this hellhole," she said after she left the meeting, telling a reporter she might leave town that night. "If I can pack my panties fast enough, I will."

Jourdanton, county seat of Atascosa County, has a population of little more than 3,000. In the past week, two City Council members have resigned in addition to the mayor.
