SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 17 (UPI) -- A survey finds parents around the world believe that a child's name can be a factor in success in adult life.

BabyCenter.com polled 35,000 expectant parents. Just over half of those responding believed that names are important to worldly success, up from 40 percent five years ago.

Cleveland Evans, a Bellevue University professor and president of the American Name Society, suggested that anxiety about the economy has made parents anxious not to hurt their children's chances.

The San Francisco-based Web site found strength was the most important factor to parents in choosing a boy's name, while with girls parents were most interested in individuality, followed by femininity. Girls are easier to name -- or that's what 62 percent of parents said they believe.

Among those polled, 38 percent said they would reject a name for being too common and 34 percent of couples disagreed on a child's name.
