LONDON, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- New guidelines at the Met Office, Britain's government weather service, have just improved the weather in the British Isles.

As one example, in the Met's world, a "small chance of showers" is now "mostly dry," The Scotsman reported.

"We are asking our forecasters to favor more positive terms wherever possible," the Met Office announced.

The style guide, worked out in cooperation with the BBC and other broadcasters, suggests giving weather first for the most populous areas.

"If a band of strong wind and rain is coming into the Western Isles of Scotland, with its population of 25,000 or 30,000, then that is significant for them," said Wayne Elliott, of the Met Office. "But if the major urban areas are not affected then it is a good idea not to focus on that first if the majority of the country is fine and settled."

Angus MacNeil, who represents the Western Isles in Parliament, fears his constituents will be getting short shrift.

"The Western Isles have already been reduced in size according to the BBC and now islanders won't be able to even hear how bad the weather will be," he told The Scotsman.
