ST. LOUIS, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- A New Orleans man who had to leave his dog behind when he was rescued from Hurricane Katrina-sparked flooding has been reunited with his pet in St. Louis.

Weeks of searching, plus help from his sister and animal rescue workers, Sunday reunited Bobby Alberti, 59, and Rover, an 80-pound black Labrador-Dalmatian mix, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Alberti said Rover has been his companion for seven years. The pooch, riding a piece of wooden fence, even went with Alberti through floodwaters to rescue neighbors before Alberti and Rover were pulled to safety.

They got separated when Alberti moved from the University of New Orleans to a Houma, La., shelter. Alberti made his way to relatives in Houston.

The separation ended Sunday when Rover, in an excited greeting, knocked his owner against a wall and licked him in the face. The Humane Society of Missouri set up the reunion.

Alberti said he did not care what happened to his house.

"I just want my dog," he said.
