GONZALES, La., Sept. 17 (UPI) -- The Starbucks in Gonzales, La., has become a haven and primary caffeine source for the military, city workers and animal rescuers in New Orleans.

"This is a little bit of civilization," Scott Smith, a task force leader for a rescue team, told the Boston Globe.

Starbucks personnel have substituted "We're glad you're here," for "How are you doing?" and sell cookies before noon -- because most breakfast foods sell out quickly. But for the most part, it's been business as usual -- except there is a lot more business.

The store has also been running out of venti cups and lids and substituting the next-largest size, grande.

"We had one guy get eight shots" of espresso, said Jennifer Hicks, Starbucks' district manager.

Some customers, who have lost everything, welcome the familiarity of Starbucks.

"I have no control over my house or my car, but I have control over my drink," one hurricane victim told Hicks.
