BUNOL, Spain, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- An estimated 40,000 Spanish revelers hurled red, ripe tomatoes at one another Wednesday as part of the southwestern city of Bunol's annual food fight.

More than 100 tons of tomatoes were launched by participants hailing from the world over to attend the festival of "la Tomatina."

The annual party -- celebrated on the last Wednesday in August -- started in the 1940s as a friendly battle among neighbors and has over time become an international spectacle with food flingers splattering each other and covering the town in tomato juice until calling a truce.
