SWAFFHAM, England, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Some British villagers are angry that a $17-million lottery winner with an extensive criminal record will light the Christmas lights.

Twenty-two-year-old Michael Carroll paid $7,200 as a sponsor for the Christmas lights to Swaffham and as a result was allowed the honor of turning on the lights, the Daily Telegraph reported.

"Who will be asked to turn on the lights next -- Jack the Ripper?" said Charles Joyce, county council member. "This man is not a celebrity, he is a common criminal. The idea that he should turn on the Christmas lights is absolutely ludicrous."

Since his lottery win three years ago, Carroll has been in court for offenses including driving without a license, handling stolen goods and a series drugs crimes.

He served five months in prison last year for failing to comply with a drug rehabilitation order and was recently in court for possession of marijuana.
