DARTFORD, England, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- The mute "Piano Man" who baffled British doctors and police for months and only played the piano has finally spoken and been discharged from a hospital.

The Mirror reported Monday he told the nursing staff he was German, had been working in Paris, but caught a train to England after losing his job. The newspaper said he returned to Germany Sunday, where he has two sisters and his father owns a farm.

The man was picked up by police on a beach in the Isle of Sheppey in the early hours of April 7. His only means of communication appeared to be through his piano-playing, The Telegraph said.

However, medical and social care agencies are bound by confidentiality laws, meaning the man's identity cannot be published.

A source at the Little Brook Hospital in Dartford, Kent, told the Mirror the man had been attempting to commit suicide when he was picked up, and he had once worked with psychiatric patients and mimicked their symptoms to dupe doctors into believing that he was ill.
