On-line poker fans pull ultimate bluff

LONDON, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Men and women are swapping gender identities to fool their opponents in on-line poker games, a British newspaper reports.

A study for the Web site UltimatePoker.com found that for men pretending to be women the most common name is Queen of Hearts, the Mirror said. At the same time, such macho-sounding players as Poker Boy and Dave Mad Dog Jones were women.

TheDaddy10, who won more than $3,600 in a single hand, revealed herself to be a young woman from Kent.

"Reading body language and facial expressions has always been a big part of poker, now online poker rooms allow people to pull off the ultimate bluff," Mark Griffiths, a psychology professor at Nottingham Trent University told the Mirror.

Griffiths suggested that players who pick the names of Hollywood stars, dead or alive, are trying to look glamorous and successful, while those who choose aggressive names are trying to project confidence.

What it adds up to, as Fil Giulione of UltimatePoker said, is that on line a good name may be as important as a good poker face in a conventional game.
