MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- The insistent buzzing sound of cicadas in mating season has some residents of Minnesota's Twin Cities longing for the roar of power tools.

Southeastern Minnesota is experiencing the annual emergence of Tibicen, an insect commonly known as the Dog Day Cicada, because it mates during the hottest time of the year.

Millions of the winged cicadas are creating their distinctive high-pitched buzz from around noon through sunset each day in a bid to mate before they die, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

The cicadas actually began appearing in late June but their numbers and noise level have grown markedly over the past few weeks as they molted and grew wings, a University of Minnesota Extension entomologist told the newspaper.
