The heist is believed to be the biggest in Brazilian history.

In a terse statement, Brazil's Central Bank said the thieves dug a tunnel nearly 700 feet long underground to reach the bank's vault.

Witnesses told police they saw a group of men in a nearby home removing what appeared to be loads of sand every day from a home for the last three months, Agencia Estado reported.
