SANTA MONICA, Calif., Aug. 7 (UPI) -- A sticker featuring the Doonesbury character "Mr. Butts" is the centerpiece of a campaign to remind people -- no smoking at the beach in Santa Monica, Calif.
The sticker, designed for the City of Santa Monica by Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Garry Trudeau, will adorn 600 beach trash cans and be included in media outreach targeting beach goers.
"We simply asked Trudeau if he'd be willing to lend Mr. Butts' persona to this education effort," said Barbara Stinchfield, director of Community and Cultural Services, "and he said yes."
Trudeau said: "Butts is such an irrepressibly upbeat advocate of bad choices that it's good to see his stunned visage evoked for a worthy cause. He would be horrified to know he's the poster butt for this campaign, but his dismay is a small price to pay to help keep Santa Monica's breeze fresh and its sands filter-free."
The Santa Monica City Council passed an ordinance in 2004 prohibiting smoking on the beach.
