LIVERPOOL, England, July 21 (UPI) -- Six people sunbathing in their birthday suits were caught up in a police sweep of a beach on England's west coast near Liverpool.

The Liverpool Daily Post reports the nude beachgoers face fines of 80 pounds (about $140) each.

Constable John Schofield said the Merseyside Police launched Operation Crow after receiving complaints from both residents of the area around Ainsdale Beach and visitors.

"We will continue to address this problem and will give penalty notices to anyone responsible for public order offenses," Schofield said.

Brenda Porter, a local official, said there were even complaints that some nude couples were doing more than sunbathing in the dunes.
