FRANKFURT, Germany, July 12 (UPI) -- A convicted murderer filed suit against Germany with the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, the German daily Die Welt reported Tuesday.

German Magnus Gaefgen, who in 2002 abducted and killed 11-year-old Jakob von Metzler, the heir to a German banking dynasty, accuses Germany of torture.

Former Frankfurt police vice-chief Wolfgang Daschner threatened Gaefgen with torture if he didn't disclose where he had hidden the abducted boy. It was later found out von Metzler had already died at that point.

Daschner was stripped of his position at the Frankfurt police department and relocated to a less prominent job. The scandal sparked a nationwide debate over the legitimacy of torture.

Last year, Gaefgen was sentenced to life in prison. Attorney Michael Heuchemer said he wants to achieve a conviction of Germany, which has "used torture to find out key elements of the case against Mr. Gaefgen."

A successful case could lead to a lesser sentence, the newspaper said.
