Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe LOUISVILLE, Ky., July 12 (UPI) -- A New York man plans to row across the Atlantic from Africa to the Brooklyn Bridge to raise awareness of AIDS in Africa and among African-Americans. Victor Mooney announced his plans at the House of Ruth, an AIDS agency in Louisville, Ky., the Louisville Courier-Journal reported. Advertisement Mooney, a communications officer at the ASA Institute of Business and Computer Technology in Brooklyn, said that one of his brothers died of AIDS and another is HIV positive. "AIDS is the polio of our time," Mooney, said. "We are killing ourselves. And we don't have to." Mooney traveled to Louisville after a stop in Indiana to buy a rowboat-building kit. He said that sponsors are covering most of the cost of the trip and volunteers are ready to help finish his boat. Mooney's plan is to start rowing Dec. 1 -- World AIDS Day -- departing from Goree Island, a former slave-trading station off the coast of Senegal.
