MASTIC, N.Y., July 7 (UPI) -- A 12-year-old Long Island, N.Y., girl who waged a 14-month battle to get her pet Chihuahua Rocco back has succeeded.

Samantha Galante and her parents were temporarily homeless early last year, and went to live in a shelter that didn't allow pets. They asked waitress Heather Workman, 25, to take care of Rocco, and she took the dog home.

When the Galantes found a home and asked for the dog back, Workman refused, saying the dog had been a gift, and that she had renamed him Taco.

The dispute went on for 10 months before the Galantes filed a lawsuit.

Wednesday, the Workmans surrendered the shaking dog to the Galantes' lawyer's office just 15 minutes before the judge's 5 p.m. deadline, the New York Post reported.

Samantha's father defended taking the little dog's case to court.

"You fight for your child -- what father wouldn't?" he said.
