FREDERICK, Md., May 18 (UPI) -- The father of a Frederick, Md., high school student says his daughter was banned from her senior prom after being quoted about her post-prom plans.

Tim Lawson said the incident resulted from comments his daughter, Shawnda, made to a Frederick News Post reporter.

A subsequent article said Shawnda and a friend, both seniors from Governor Thomas Johnson High School, planned to drink alcohol on prom night.

"Kids say the darndest things to start with, whether she said it to be cool or if she even said it," Tim Lawson told WUSA-TV, Washington, D.C.

He claims Shawnda was contacted by the school shortly after the story was printed and told she could not attend the prom.

"She's disappointed more than anything because she was waiting," Lawson said. "This is her senior year. She didn't go to any other proms."

A spokesperson for the Frederick County schools told WUSA the District has a zero tolerance policy for alcohol and drugs, but parents have the right to appeal disciplinary actions.

Lawson said he planned to plead his daughter's case with the school's principal.
