NAGOYA, Japan, May 15 (UPI) -- A Japanese study finds that people with respiratory disease are unwilling to give up their pets for the sake of feeling better themselves.

Mainichi Shimbun reports that doctors at a Nagoya hospital tracked 279 patients with asthma, almost half of them pet owners. Takahiko Horiguchi, head of the research team, found not one patient willing to sacrifice a cat or dog on medical advice although a few people gave away hamsters.

"Patients are treating their pets like children, with more than 80 percent keeping their animals inside

with them," he said.

Even patients who are allergic to dogs or cats kept the animals.
