CLAIREMONT, Calif., May 10 (UPI) -- A 54-year-old California man was arrested when police found his 9-year-old son driving because he apparently was too drunk to get behind the wheel.

A police officer pulled over the car in Clairemont, Calif., Sunday after noticing its smoking engine and what appeared to be a too-young driver.

The 9-year-old drove up on a curb and stopped the car just before a telephone pole when police turned on their lights and sirens, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Both the driver and his 6-year-old brother got out of the car crying, a police spokesman said.

The boys' mother, who lived nearby, noticed smoke coming from the car and ran out with a neighbor's garden hose, helping extinguish the small engine fire with the help of the on-scene officer.

Police arrested the father on suspicion of being drunk in public and endangering the children. Both boys were in custody of their mother, who is divorced from the father.
