BOERNE, Texas, April 27 (UPI) -- With gasoline remaining more than $2 a gallon, Lanne Brehmer has found a way around the continued gouging at the gas pumps -- refining used vegetable oil.

Brehmer has created his own vegetable oil refinery and pump on his Texas farm, with a 3-tank processor that turns common cooking oil into biodegradable diesel fuel, WAOI San Antonio reported Wednesday.

He said he gets more than 40 miles to the gallon in his Volkswagon Jetta, and 20 miles a gallon in his truck.

"You do not notice any difference in performance between the bio-diesel and regular diesel," Brehmer said.

Vegetable oil retails at about $3 a gallon, so the Boerne resident processes used vegetable oil from local restaurant to help keep costs low.

By the end of the year, Brehmer said, he hopes to set up his own fueling station in Boerne.
