Subscribe | UPI Odd Newsletter Subscribe KALAMAZOO, Mich., April 8 (UPI) -- Animal rights activists are trying to break a generations-old tradition of feeding leftover bread to ducks and geese in a Kalamazoo, Mich., park. As temperatures finally broke the 60-degree mark this week, families flocked to Milham Park with their bread, to be greeted by anti-bird-feeing warning signs and humans, as well, to admonish the ban-breakers, the Kalamazoo Gazette reported Friday. Advertisement "It's killing them with kindness, so to speak," Aaron Winters, executive director of the Kalamazoo Humane Society, told the newspaper. George Horn, a volunteer authorized to feed the ducks and geese, says white bread is one of the worst things to feed birds from a nutritional standpoint. In addition, he says, it gives them no reason to migrate south and many die or suffer frostbite during severe Michigan winters. "They say: 'South? Go south? Why would we want to do that? We've got everything we need here,'" Horn said.
