TOKYO, April 3 (UPI) -- Japan's Supreme Court has released from jail a Tokyo man accused of possessing hashish to take a university entrance examination.

The 20-year-old man took the art university entrance exam and, although he failed, he said he's glad he tried and he plans to try again, the Mainichi Daily News reported Sunday.

"I've never heard of the Supreme Court releasing a criminal defendant on bail to allow him or her to sit an entrance examination," said Osamu Niikura, a professor at Aoyama Gakuin University. "The court seems to have taken into consideration his regret over the crime."

The court noted the man admitted possessing hashish, has no previous criminal record and lives with his family.

Tokyo District Court sentenced the unidentified man to eight months in prison, suspended for three years for violating the Cannabis Control Law.
